is...
Setting Realistic Goals
One of the most common reasons that individuals fail at losing weight is the fact
that they set unrealistic goals. In order to set a realistic goal it is important to first determine a healthy
weight based on your age and activity level.
There are numerous calculators online that can be used to find a healthy weight
range. Once this is completed, it is safe to assume that a 1 to 3 pound weight loss per week is realistic. Setting
a goal too high can cause failure, because too much restriction leads to hunger, which is difficult to
fight.
Instead of starving yourself, plan on reducing your calorie level as least a
couple hundred calories per day. Goals are important because they give individuals something to move toward and
also help motivate! Setting goals may seem simple, but they are the first step as the best way to lose
weight.
Change Eating Habits
In order to reduce the amount of calories that are taken in every day it is
important to change one’s eating habits. Generally the excess calories that keep the weight on people is based on
sugary foods, such as junk food, chips, etc.
To implement the best way to lose weight, one’s eating habits must be changed; by
eliminating a great deal of those types of foods, and allow for an introduction of healthier foods. Not only are
those healthier foods good for the person, but also will help curb cravings in between meals. Snacking is a
weakness of many, but can be tamed through the use of fruits, vegetables and other low calorie foods.
Portion control should also be used at meal time to avoid overeating. A good rule
of thumb is to take half the portions that are normally on your dinner plate, for each meal. This reduces the
calories and will also help retrain the body into surviving on smaller meals.
Increase Physical Activity
Of course, it goes without saying that the best way to lose weight is to increase
ones level of physical activity. This does not mean that the exercise need be strenuous or harsh. A brisk walk,
swim or low impact aerobic class will suffice. Spend at least 30 minutes, 3 times per week exercising and it will
make an immediate difference in your ability to lose the weight. There are a number of exercises that can be done
daily and it may be as small as taking the stairs, or walking the dog around the block, that does the
trick!
